Considering a trip to Malta in September? It’s a great time. The weather is still hot, and the sea is warm. By mid-September, the summer crowds have gone. So, you’ll have more space to enjoy the island, without the tourist rush.
I’ve been living here since 2011, and let me tell you, September is a great time to visit Malta.

Average temperature, sunshine hours and rain
The weather in Malta in September is great. It’s still like summer.
During the day, it’s usually around 28°C (82°F) at the beginning of the month, and it goes down to about 26°C (79°F) by the end. At night, it cools down a bit, so you might want to bring a light jacket just in case.
September is also very sunny in Malta. You can expect around 8 hours of sunshine every day, so you’ll have plenty of time to work on your tan or explore the island.
Rain isn’t a problem either – there are on average only about 4 rainy days in the whole month, and even then, it’s usually a quick shower.
You know, sometimes I forget that it’s not summer anymore in other parts of Europe. It still feels like summer here in Malta! I remember one time, I travelled to central Europe at the end of September and did not pack the right clothing. Lesson learned!
Just keep in mind that it can get humid in September. But don’t let that bother you. Wear light, loose clothing, drink lots of water, and take breaks in the shade or air conditioning when you need to cool off.
Sea temperature
If you’re a beach person, you’ll love it here in September. The sea is still warm, with temperatures around 26°C (79°F) in the first half of the month and 25°C (77°F) in the second half. You can swim, snorkel, or float around without getting cold.
The beaches are amazing this time of year. You can soak up the sun, swim in the clear water, and try out fun water sports like kayaking or paddle boarding.
What to Pack for Your Trip to Malta in September
If you travel to Malta in early September, pack the same kind of clothes you would bring for August. Think lightweight, breathable stuff like shorts, t-shirts or dresses.
As you get closer to mid-September, things might start to cool down a bit. Don’t worry though, it’s not like you’ll need a parka or anything! Throw in a couple of light layers, like a thin sweater or a long-sleeved shirt, and you’ll be good to go.
September is still an awesome time to hit the beach in Malta. So, make sure you pack your swimsuit.
Don’t forget about sun protection, too. The sun can still be pretty strong in September, so pack some high-quality sunscreen, a hat, and a pair of sunglasses.
If you’re planning on doing some sightseeing or hiking, make sure you bring some comfortable shoes. Flip-flops are great for the beach, but you’ll want something a little sturdier for walking around towns or hitting the trails.
In terms of other essentials, don’t forget to pack your usual toiletries, any medications you may need, and a portable charger for your phone. Also, grab a mosquito repellent because they are common in September.

Interested in underwater fun? Consider snorkelling or scuba diving. You’ll spot beautiful reefs and fish. Scuba divers can explore many shipwrecks near the Maltese Islands.
If you enjoy exploring the coast by paddling, try kayaking or paddle boarding. These sports are great for finding hidden coves and beaches.

Festivals and Events
September is full of great events.
First, on the 8th of September, we celebrate Victory Day, a major national holiday. Additionally, many villages, including Naxxar, Mellieha, Isla, and Xaghra in Gozo, host their own feasts. At these events, you can enjoy traditional Maltese celebrations, local food, and fireworks.
The Malta International Airshow is a must-see this month. It’s thrilling to watch planes perform acrobatic stunts in the sky. Usually, the show is held in the second half of the month. Check their website for updates.
Independence Day falls on the 21st of September. It’s a public holiday. In Valletta, there are events and celebrations.

Exploring Historical Sites
Don’t miss Valletta, Malta’s capital city. It’s got incredible baroque architecture and some interesting museums.
Then there’s Mdina, which is known as the silent city. Walking through its narrow streets is like stepping back in time to the Middle Ages.
For something really unique, check out the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, an underground prehistoric burial site. Make sure you book at least two months in advance. Book your ticket here.
And if you want to see some of the oldest freestanding structures in the world, head to the Hagar Qim and Mnajdra temples.

Outdoor Activities
Take a boat trip to Comino and Gozo. Comino has the famous Blue Lagoon, which is this absolutely stunning spot for swimming and snorkelling.
Gozo has many natural attractions such as Dwejra Bay, Ghasri Valley, Wied il Mielah, Xlendi, or Mgarr Ix Xini.
In Malta, the Dingli Cliffs are a must-see – the views of the Mediterranean Sea are unbelievable. It’s also a great place to see the sunset.
Also, visit the Blue Grotto and take a boat to explore caves.
And if you’re into hiking, the Victoria Lines are really cool. They’re these old fortifications that run across the island.
