Gozo, the second largest island in the Maltese archipelago, is famous for its beautiful beaches, each with a special charm. Whether you prefer the famous red sands of Ramla Beach or the hidden treasures of San Blas and Mgarr Ix-Xini, Gozo’s beaches have something to suit every taste.
I have been living in Malta since 2011, and I enjoy visiting the beautiful beaches of Gozo. Going to Gozo on weekends and spending time at the beaches is a favorite summer activity of mine.

What Makes Ramla Beach Special?
Ramla Beach, also known as “Ramla l-Hamra” (Red Beach), is a stunning sandy beach on the island of Gozo. Its unique reddish sand sets it apart from other beaches in the Maltese archipelago. Surrounded by cliffs and sand dunes, Ramla Beach offers an unspoiled natural setting.
The beautiful, clear turquoise waters at Ramla Beach are great for swimming and snorkelling. Snorkelling along the rocky coastline is a lovely experience.
The water is shallow, making it ideal for families. Please keep in mind that the entrance to the water is a bit rocky with small pebbles, but there are no pebbles at the end of the beach on the right side.
Is Ramla Beach Right for You?
Ramla Beach is the biggest sandy beach in Gozo and is loved by both locals and tourists. But, because it’s so popular, it can get quite busy, especially in the peak summer months. It still tends to be less crowded than some beaches in Malta.
The beach is easily accessible, with a bus stop nearby and a large parking area. But, keep in mind that the bus service to Ramla Beach is less frequent compared to more central locations in Gozo.
Amenities and Activities
At Ramla Beach, you’ll find all the essential amenities for a comfortable day at the beach. There are public restrooms and showers. You can also rent sun beds and umbrellas for a relaxing day in the sun.
For those feeling adventurous, there are several water sports activities to enjoy, such as kayaking, banana rides or stand-up paddle boarding.
If you’re feeling hungry, there are a few food and drink options available near the beach. And if you’re up for a bit of a hike, you can climb up to the nearby Tal-Mixta Cave for stunning views over the beach and the Mediterranean Sea.

Discover the Charm of San Blas Beach
San Blas Beach is a secluded paradise on the island of Gozo. It offers distinctive reddish sand, like Ramla Beach. It is framed by boulders and raw nature, giving it a rustic, untouched charm.
Getting to San Blas Beach is an adventure in itself. The path is steep. But, the beauty of San Blas Beach and the valley leading to it make it worth the effort.
Is San Blas Beach Suitable for Everyone?
San Blas Beach’s unique charm comes with some challenges. Regular cars can’t descend the steep path, so you have to walk down. The walk takes around 20 minutes, and the climb back up, especially in the scorching sun, can be taxing.
The beach became smaller due to storms washing away the sand. It is quite tiny. If you come late, you might have trouble finding a spot to lay down.
The beach has sand mixed with rocks and pebbles. The rocky path into the water and challenging terrain is not ideal for families with young children.

Amenities and Nearby Attractions
San Blas Beach features a beach bar where you can enjoy refreshing drinks and tasty light snacks. While the beach provides portable toilets, there are no other facilities available at the moment.
When I visit this beach, I always make a pitstop at Mekrens Bakery for some Gozitan ftira to-go. You really have to try this must-have local delicacy.

- Walking distance from the bus stop: 20 minutes away from the beach
- Bus frequency: Every one and a half hours
- Parking available: A tiny car park mid-way to the beach is here. But, I recommend parking here because there is more space.
Wied il-Ghasri: A Picturesque Canyon with a Pebble Beach

What is Special about Wied il-Ghasri Beach?
Wied il-Ghasri is a valley surrounded by tall limestone cliffs. It resembles a canyon and stretches 300 meters inland to a tiny pebble beach. Nothing is better than swimming along cliffs, snorkelling or just enjoying the beautiful scenery of Gozo at this beach.
Is Wied il-Ghasri the Right Fit for You?
Wied il-Ghasri is unsuitable for spending a day there since it’s tiny and has no toilets or food or drink shops. Also, the beach is pebbled, so lying down and sunbathing is uncomfortable. But, I strongly recommend spending a few hours there.
The location is off the beaten path – Wied il-Ghasri is less crowded, especially in the mornings and evenings.
In the afternoons, the rocks provide shade – a great place to escape the heat.
Getting There:
The Wied il-Ghasri Valley is remote, so getting to it can be challenging. If you come by car, you should follow a narrow road along the salt pans to reach the site. You can park along the road or in a small car park next to the entrance to the valley.
Getting to Wied il-Ghasri by public transport is more difficult because no bus stop is nearby. The closest one is in Zebbug, 15-20 minutes away.
If you are up for a longer hike, combine this with a trek from Xwejni Bay to Gharsri Valley. It will take you 35 – 40 minutes to get to Ghasri Valley and you will pass along the ancient salt pans.

Hondoq Bay: The Ultimate Spot for Beach Fun

What Sets Hondoq Beach Apart?
Hondoq Bay, also known as Hondoq ir-Rummien Bay, is a beach located in the south of Gozo. It’s known for its local atmosphere. From Hondoq Bay, you get a stunning view of Comino.
The water at Hondoq Bay is clear, like glass. It’s safe for swimming, with lifeguards on duty to ensure safety.
One of the highlights of Hondoq Bay is the jumping spots. If you’re feeling brave, there are several places where you can dive into the blue sea. Just remember to always check the depth and watch out for people swimming before you jump.
Besides jumping, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy at Hondoq Bay. Rent a boat, try jet skiing, kayaking or take a fun ride on a crazy sofa.
If you’re hungry, grab a bite at the Hondoq kiosk or at the beach restaurant.
Is Hondoq Bay the Right Choice for You?
Hondoq Bay has many great features, but it might not suit everyone. The beach can get packed, especially during July, August, and September. If you’re not a fan of crowds, you might want to visit early in the morning.
The beach has more pebbles than sand, so it might not be ideal if you prefer soft sand. It offers basic facilities like a snack kiosk, small restaurant and restrooms. But, don’t expect a full resort experience. You won’t find umbrellas, sundeck rentals, or fancy eateries

The easiest way to reach Hondoq Bay is by car. There’s a spacious parking area right near the beach, so no need to stress about where to leave your vehicle.

Why Visit Mgarr Ix-Xini Beach?
Mgarr Ix-Xini is a stunning bay on Gozo’s southern coast. It’s famous for its dramatic scenery, located in a narrow valley. The bay offers a small, pebbly beach and is enclosed by steep cliffs.
What I like about Mgarr ix-Xini is snorkelling along the cliffs. There you’ll see various fish and rock formations.
While the sun can be relentless in the Maltese summer. But Mgarr ix-Xini has you covered—literally. One side of the beach enjoys shade in the afternoon, providing a much-needed break from the heat.
Is Mgarr Ix-Xini Beach a Good Choice for You?
The road to the beach is narrow and steep, which could be tough for new drivers or those not used to tricky paths. Parking spaces are limited, so it could be disappointing to have to turn back after a challenging journey.
Mgarr ix-Xini’s beach has pebbles, not sand. Pebbles are not as comfortable for sunbathing, building sandcastles, or relaxing.
Getting There:
Public transportation options are limited. The closest bus stop is 1.80 km away. You will have to walk on the road that might be busy.
It’s best to take a cab if you do not have a car. Otherwise, you can take a scenic hike from Mgarr Harbour. It takes 40-50 minutes and offers wonderful scenery.

Does Gozo have good beaches?
Gozo offers a variety of unique beaches to suit everyone’s preferences. One example is Ramla Beach, the largest in Gozo, known for its red sand. Visitors can easily rent water sports equipment and sunbeds here. Hondoq Bay is another great option with spots for jumping into the water and also offers water sports rentals. Smaller beaches like Sand Blas may have fewer amenities, but they provide a quieter atmosphere. Additionally, there are rocky beaches perfect for snorkeling adventures.
Which beach is safe to swim in Gozo?
Most beaches in Gozo are generally safe due to the clean and clear water they offer. Hondoq Bay and Ramla Beach, for instance, have lifeguards available during peak season. However, like many places in the Mediterranean, jellyfish can be spotted in Gozitan waters at times. Most jellyfish stings are not serious, but it’s important to stay alert. While there are no official nudist beaches in Gozo, some secluded bays and coves may attract nudists due to their remote locations.
