Xwejni Bay is a lovely beach in the north of Gozo. It’s a great spot for snorkelers because of its clear waters and marine life. If you want a quiet day by the sea, away from the crowds, this is the perfect place for you.
I’ve been lucky to call Malta home since 2011, and I love discovering the beautiful coastal spots in Gozo. Xwejni Bay has become my favourite place to unwind. You can relax on comfortable sunbeds and enjoy fresh food from a nearby kiosk. Xwejni Beach is my top choice for a peaceful day by the sea.
My Top Reasons to Visit Xwejni Bay
Peace and quiet: Xwejni Bay is rarely crowded. You’ll have space to relax without bumping elbows with other beachgoers.
Tasty bites: The beach kiosk is a great. I tried their coffee – really good! They also serve fresh pizza and other snacks. Everything’s fresh and delicious. Perfect for a beach day fuel-up.
Affordable sunbeds: Want to lounge in comfort? Sunbed rental is a bargain. I paid only 5 euros for a full day. Staying for a few hours? Ask for a shorter rental – it’s even cheaper. The attendant is super friendly and will help you out.
Safe swimming: There’s a lifeguard on duty. The shallow water is great for kids and less-confident swimmers. You can relax knowing someone is keeping an eye out.
Snorkel heaven: The right side of the bay is a snorkeler’s paradise! It’s one of my favorite spots to explore underwater. You can enjoy watching groups of sea bass and lots of tiny, colorful fish swimming around the reefs. Plus, keep an eye out for little shrimps dancing through the water!
Convenient access: There’s a small car park right by the beach, plus some on-street parking options. I usually find a spot without any trouble, but it’s a great idea to arrive a bit earlier in the summer! Also, there is a bus stop right next to the beach, making it easy to get here.
Why Xwejni Bay Might Not Be for You?
I know that this beach isn’t everyone’s favourite. Here are some reasons why it might not appeal to some people.
Not sandy: Xwejni Bay isn’t your typical soft-sand beach. Forget building sandcastles here. It’s pebbly, so bring aqua shoes. You’ll want them for walking in the water too—there are pebbles and rocks underfoot.
No water sports: You won’t find kayak rentals or banana boat rides here. For water activities, head to Ramla Beach or Hondoq Bay instead.
Small size: Xwejni Bay isn’t huge. If you’re after a long stretch of beach, this might feel too small for you.

Xwejni Bay is in the north Gozo, near Zebbug and Marsalforn.

Things to do in Xwejni Bay
Take a dip: The shallow waters are perfect for a refreshing swim. Splash around and cool off!
Go snorkelling: Grab a mask and explore underwater. You’ll see colourful fish, maybe some octopuses, and beautiful reefs.
Watch scuba divers: Xwejni Bay is famous for its Double Arch dive site. You’ll often see scuba divers gearing up and entering the water. If you’re snorkeling, swim above them and watch their air bubbles rise!
Visit the salt pans: A short walk from the bay, you’ll find ancient salt pans. These shallow pools are used to evaporate seawater and harvest salt. It’s a traditional Gozitan practice that’s still alive today. In summer, you might even see locals collecting salt. It’s a unique look at island life and its history.

Tips for the Best Experience at Xwejni Bay
Want to make the most of your Xwejni Bay visit? Here are some insider tips to help you have a great time:
Jellyfish alert: Watch out for these sea buddies. Check my jellyfish guide to learn about local species and what to do if you get stung.
Pack your snorkel gear and aqua shoes: There’s no rental shop here. Bring your own mask and snorkel to explore underwater. Aqua shoes make walking in the water much more comfortable.
Food and drinks: No worries! There’s a kiosk on the beach and another across the street. You won’t go hungry or thirsty.
Toilet situation: There’s a public toilet across the street. But heads up – no showers on the beach.
Sun protection: The Maltese sun is strong. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and rent an umbrella.
